In an earlier question posted by me, I found out that paying for the 3G network can only be done via a contract. How exactly can it be payed for via Pay as you Go?

You can put a pay as you go sim card in the 3G or 3GS. But I would strongly recommend against it. the iPhone uses the internet for almost all features on the phone and you will eat through your minutes like crazy.
